Holy Potatoes! What the Hell?! is a whacky hell-themed cooking management sim where you take on the role of a chef in an Afterlife populated by potatoes! Sort potato sinners into cooking stations to extract sinfully delicious ingredients, cook up incredible potato-based recipes, and appease the gods in your Pantheon by serving them savory spud dishes!

The core gameplay loop involves purchasing items at a shop named Starchbucks Supplies which provide various boosts then when you're ready, you begin the fun part. You're basically presented with a succession of sinners who each have their own appearance, name, and sin. These are all procedurally generated so it's hilarious reading what sins the potatoes committed. Anyway, each sinner has stats and by looking at them, you can judge where to put them. Certain stats fit the various machines better so making high quality ingredients is the key to success. Once the gods start ordering, you can prepare meals with the ingredients which are obviously all potato-based. Care for a potato kebab? How about an Irish potato cake? Yeah, I didn't think so. If you manage to do well, you'll increase your Favor which can be used to upgrade your machines and purchase nifty new facilities and labs which offer even more recipes.

Play as Sweeny Tots, a potato chef in the Afterlife determined to find out what happened in his previous life as he works to ascend to heaven. Having no recollection of your life before, you appear in hell, late for your first day of work. After a brief and rather vague explanation, you are thrown into the kitchen and must adapt to your new job - sorting potato sinners into their rightful stations and cooking up delicious, tantalising dishes befitting the Gods!

Anyhow, we had no such inhibitions as we headed off in a VW Polo for Ireland this summer of '93. The word, "holy," derives from the Old German for "whole." And that's what we were after - the whole experience. We set off from Edinburgh and it really was a laugh. We could feel the faeries jumping onto the back bumper as we drove down to the Stranraer ferry.
